University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods will name its girls’ lacrosse and field hockey field after popular longtime coach Muriel E. Brock as it kicks off a $50 million fundraising campaign on Saturday.

The girls’ athletic director from 1956 until 1992, Brock, 86, is being honored for her dedication in helping student-athletes reach their potential on the field and in the classroom, school officials said.

The Sure Foundation campaign, Liggett’s major fundraiser, helps pays for investment in the school’s campus, academics, endowment and operations. New artificial turf at Liggett’s eight athletic fields – including Muriel E. Brock Field – was funded by the Sure Foundation.

Saturday’s dedication is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the school, 1045 Cook Road, with alumni Lisa Black (’77) and Susan Ford (’63) and Lower School physical education teacher Biffy Fowler attending.

To register for the free event, call Shaye Campbell at scampbell@uls.org or 313-884-4444, Ext. 418.

University Liggett bills itself as Michigan’s oldest independent, co-educational day school.
