Corey Allen of Ypsilanti
Detroit Mercy has signed Mr. Basketball finalist Corey Allen (Ypsilanti) to a national letter of intent.
A 6-foot-3, 210-pound guard, Allen averaged 23.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 48% on threes last season. Ypsilanti was 79-15 in Allen’s four years, including 22-2 in 2015-16.
He was rated a top-10 player in the state by Bank Hoops and Prep Hoops.
“Corey is a fierce competitor who has led his high school teams in a variety of ways,” new UDM coach Bacari Alexander said in a released statement. “Having been coached by Steve Brooks, you can rest assured that he understands what hard work and dedication is.”
Jermaine Jackson staying
Jermaine Jackson is the first assistant coach on Alexander’s staff.
Jackson stayed on board after Ray McCallum was fired after the Horizon League tournament. Jackson, a former UDM player and Detroit Piston, was hired by athletic director Robert Vowels and was on McCallum’s staff for one year.
Jackson was the Horizon League player of the year in 1999, when he led the Titans to a 25-6 record, the league championship and an upset of UCLA in the NCAA tournament. The year before, he helped the Titans to their first tournament bid in 19 years, where they shocked St. John’s.
Jackson was elected to the UDM Titan Hall of Fame in 2010 and is 20th on the team’s all-time scoring list, fifth in assists and ninth in steals. He was at UDM from 1995-99.
The Detroit Finney graduate played in 135 NBA games with Detroit, Toronto, Atlanta, Milwaukee and New York.
