From left, Urban Meyer, Mark Dantonio and Jim Harbaugh share a moment at the Sound Mind Sound Body camp.
Satellite camps are back in vogue, and Michigan State football coaches are following the Sound Mind Sound Body Academy around the country.
Mark Dantonio’s staff is scheduled to make all six national stops of next month’s prospect camp, which originated in Detroit.
The organization’s centerpiece camp in Detroit is June 9-10 at Wayne State University, where Dantonio is typically one of the featured speakers along with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, Ohio State’s Urban Meyer and Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly. More than 60 colleges are expected to attend this year, according to 247sports.com.
MSU also plans to have coaches in attendance at SMSB’s other five camps: June 3-4 in Atlanta, June 6-7 in Houston, June 12 in Tampa, June 16-17 in Los Angeles and June 23-24 in Washington, D.C.
Five freshmen in the Spartans’ 2016 recruiting class attended the SMSB camp: receiver Donnie Corley, quarterback Messiah deWeaver, wide receiver Trishton Jackson, offensive lineman Thiyo Lukusa and safety Demetric Vance.
Curtis Blackwell, director of college advancement and performance for MSU football, co-founded the SMSB camps in 2004. Dantonio and the Spartans hired him in 2013.
Harbaugh and his staff are only expected to be at the Detroit SMSB camp, but Michigan coaches reportedly will travel to at least a dozen other satellite camps in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas and Virginia, this summer.
