The cousins hugged – Detroit Cass Tech’s Jaylen Kelly-Powell and King’s Ambry Thomas.
It was their last game against each other as high school players.
Both are being heavily recruited by Michigan among other top schools.
With Jim Harbaugh in attendance, they both showed why.
Kelly-Powell spent a lot of time in Cass Tech’s backfield and had seven carries for 71 yards.
“I’ll play wherever the coaches tell me,’’ he said after Cass’ 41-20 victory over King for the PSL championship Friday night at Ford Field.
“Our senior class, we’ve been trying to do this since our freshmen year. We won it freshman year now we’re finishing it. It’s not about settling scores, it’s about winning with my guys.”
Kelly-Powell said he and his cousin have talked about playing together in college, and it could happen.
“He has to do what’s best for him and I have to do what’s best for me,’’ he said.
He noticed Harbaugh on the sideline, but said: “I had to concentrate on the game. I knew he was here. It’ll come down to where’s the best place for me. Michigan is after me hard. I’m tired.”
And Thomas showed why they are after him.
He had touchdown catches of 37, 13 and 29 yards and spend his usual time in the secondary.
“I thought we played hard; we came back and fought,” said Thomas. “They are one of the best teams we’ll face. We just have to get ready for the playoffs now.”
Donovan Peoples-Jones did his usually thing with four catches for almost 100 yards and a 55-yard TD strike over Thomas to get the scoring started.
“We wanted to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers,” said Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher.
