Detroit Cass Tech and Detroit King meet for the second time this year in the PSL Division I championship game Friday at Ford Field.
The Son of Swami is back — and not a minute too soon.
The All-Knowing One had a marital spat last weekend as he attended two weddings, missing a football weekend for only the third time in his 47 years at the Free Press.
Mrs. SOS declared that there was not supposed to be a third person in their reception party.
SOS was stunned. He asked if Mrs. SOS was referring to her well-publicized flirtation with Brad Pitt, but she said no. Then SOS was worried because he figured Mrs. SOS found out about SOS’s long-standing dalliance with Olivia Munn, but she said no again.
Then she pointed to SOS’s phone, insisting SOS put it away. For some reason, Mrs. SOS didn’t appreciate SOS spending some of (OK, most of) Friday’s lovely Brink-Harrison wedding retweeting high school scores to his followers.
One SOS Twitter follower suggested he put away his phone and dance with Mrs. SOS, which he did with great regularity. SOS actually won the dance floor with his performance during Mrs. SOS’s favorite song “Shut Up and Dance with Me.”
Then it was off to Pittsburgh — with Mrs. SOS — for the elegant Edmonds-Dempsey wedding where father of the groom, Mike (No Show) Dempsey apparently officiated a high school football game between the wedding ceremony and the reception.
At the formal reception SOS looked resplendent by following the advice of Chelsea’s Jeff Daniels, who recommended a powder blue tuxedo Daniels wore for one of his roles. (It probably wasn’t for “The Newsroom.”)
Local 4 TV’s Jason Colthorp won the dance floor competition, much to the chagrin of Bernie Smilovitz, who was still seething over finishing second to bride Jamie Edmonds as the station’s most attractive sports anchor.
With both couples enjoying wedding bliss, SOS is back for the final week of the regular season. And he will be tweeting and retweeting his brains out under the account @MickMcCabe1 without having to suffer the wrath of Mrs. SOS.
Detroit Cass Tech (8-0) vs. Detroit King (7-1) at Ford Field, 7 Friday. Cass Tech won the first meeting, 31-18, on a sloppy field. SOS has a hunch that this time conditions will be perfect, which SOS believes will favor the Technicians. SOS hasn’t been impressed with King’s two close victories over East English Village the past two weeks. The Crusaders better find a way to handle Cass’ skill players or this could be a long night. Momma Cass 33, King of Wishful Thinking 22.
Walled Lake Western (7-1) at Brighton (7-1), 7 Friday. When it counts most, Brighton’s defense has been impressive. But it might have to play at a higher level to handle Western and all of its weapons, including terrific receiver Cody White and effective passer Johnny Tracy. If you stop that combination, you have to be mindful of RB Jalen Marshall, who is just flat-out difficult to bring down. One helpful hint for the Brighton offense: Don’t throw the ball anywhere near the vicinity of White or you just might be watching a pick-six. Walled Luck Casino 28, Brighton Beach Memoirs 19.
Birmingham Groves (8-0) at Saline (8-0), 7 Friday. Groves already has won the OAA White title and Saline is the champs of the SEC Red. But in addition to having an excellent test before the playoffs, the winner is going to wind up with a bundle of playoff points, enough to likely ensure home-field advantage through the regionals. That should be plenty of incentive. Saline Solutions 17, Orange Grove 15.
Frankenmuth (8-0) at Freeland (8-0), 7 Friday. If Frankenmuth wants to claim the TVC championship, it will have to overcome Freeland’s three-headed monster of a running attack in Chris Bell, Max Kubiak and Garhet Metiva. And then there is QB Jake Kelsey, who can’t be ignored. Frankenmuth has one of the state’s top QBs in Jared Davis, who is effective running and passing, especially when he is passing to Grant Bronner. Frankenmuth also can gain gobs of yards on the ground with Kris Roche and Zach Jacobs. Chicken Dinners 42, Tori Jankoska High 38.
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (5-3) vs. Novi Detroit Catholic Central (8-0) at Ford Field, 7 Saturday. In order for St. Mary’s to gain an automatic spot in the state playoffs, it must do something no other team has done this season — beat Catholic Central, which beat St. Mary’s, 28-7, two weeks ago. Not only must OLSM stop the running of Nick Capatina, it has to keep QB Austin Brown from hitting key passes. The Eaglets will need a good game from running back RaShawn Allen to avoid another loss to the Shamrocks. The Vatican 14, St. Mary’s by the Lake 10.
