The Joneses met on opposite sides of the soccer field Monday afternoon.

Karic Jones is head girls and boys soccer coach at Pontiac High.

His sister, Rory, is a freshman at Marine City Cardinal Mooney, where she plays defense and midfield.

Sister got the upper hand Monday in a 5-0 victory at Pontiac.

“It’s not going to be good around the house tonight,” said Rory. “We won. I knew we would. We wanted to dominate them and we did.”

Mooney improved to 2-8 while Pontiac fell to 2-5.

Rory is coached by Jason Petrella, who coached Karic in high school at Cardinal Mooney until he graduated in 2011.

Karic and Rory still live at home with their parents, Dave and Jeanine Hamer-Jones.

There has been a lot of smack talk going leading up to Monday.

When Rory was introduced to the small crowd, Karic grabbed her and gave her a hug.

“I’ve watched their teams six times, so I had a pretty good understanding of how they play,” said Karic.

“We didn’t play well today.”

Karic coached his sister in the sixth and seventh grade at St. Mary’s in Mount Clemens.

In going against his former coach, Karic was respectful.

“I really look up to Jason,’’ said Karic. “He got me through a lot of tough times in high school. I started four years for him. Just to be able to go back and beat him would be a great matchup.”

Bragging rights will be heard loud and clear since Rory’s room is just one room away from Karic’s.

Pontiac had problems throughout the game getting the ball out of their end.

Audrey Kurtz made Pontiac pay with the game’s first goal.

Kurtz scored again at the 29:46 mark to make it 2-0. She added her third goal before halftime.

Lilly Wolf scored in the second half to make it 4-0.

“I don’t know which Jones will eventually be better,” said Petrella. “Rory is just a freshman. She has a bright future.”

And bragging rights.
