Michigan athletes at Rio Olympics: Friday’s results

Free Press columnist Jeff Seidel looks at some athletes, including those with Michigan ties, competing today in the Summer Olympics

■ Connor Jaeger

The swimmer who graduated from Michigan with a mechanical engineering degree in 2014, will tackle the 1,500 freestyle at 2:10 p.m. (heats). (Update: He finished second in his heat, in a time of 14:45.74)

■ Michael Phelps

The gold medal machine who took classes at U-M and once swam for Club Wolverine, will swim in the 100 butterfly final at 9:12 p.m. He’s also part of the 4x100m medley relay, with a heat at 2:58 p.m. (Update:He finished in three-way tie for second.)

■ Alisha Glass

Setter from Leland will lead the undefeated U.S. women’s volleyball team against Italy at 2 p.m. (Update: Glass had two kills, eight digs and 45 sets as the U.S. won, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20).

■ Andrew Evans

The Portage athlete will compete in the discus, as track and field finally gets underway. Qualifying starts at 8:30 a.m. (Update: He did not advance, finishing seventh in his qualifying round with an average throw of 61.87)

Other athletes

■ Grace Luczak (Ann Arbor Pioneer) and Felice Mueller (U-M) — Women’s pairs final in rowing at 10:04 a.m. (final). (Update: They finished fourth.)

■ Aron Baynes (Pistons/Australia) — Basketball vs. China at 1:15 p.m. (group play). (Update: Baynes had 12 points and four rebounds in a 93-68 win).

■ Felix Aubock (U-M/Austria) — 1,500-meter freestyle in men’s swimming at 1:34 p.m. (heats). (Update: He finished last in his heat, in a time of 15:36.24)

■ Lauren Paolini (Saline) — Alternate for U.S. volleyball vs. Italy at 2 p.m. (group play). (Update: The U.S. won, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20. Paolini did not play.)

■ Mikaela Mayer (Northern Michigan) — Lightweight U.S. boxing vs. Jennifer Chieng, Micronesia, at 4:30 p.m. (round of 16).

■ Draymond Green (Saginaw/Michigan State) — U.S. basketball vs. Serbia at 6 p.m. (group play). (Update:The U.S. won, 94-91.)

■ Nicole (Edwards) Sifuentes (U-M/Canada) — 1,500-meter run at 7:52 p.m. (round one).
